Dear Mr and Mrs Weasley,

Please allow me to express my sympathies regarding Ginny's unfortunate collapse this morning. Rest assured, the prefects are doing all we can to control the rumours, particularly anything remotely tinged with a hint of the problems of her first year.

I've gone to see her and Madam Pomfrey reports that she had contacted you by Floo earlier today. Ginny's resting comfortably, just worn clean out by her busy academic and work schedule, but there doesn't appear to be anything more sinister going on.

I also want to apologise for not being more aware of her level of exhaustion. I relied on the Gryffindor prefects to report anything egregious but of course, I take a special interest in Ginny, along with her brothers. It's regrettable that Ginny's independence has apparently led her to conceal her over-commitment from all around her. I've interviewed Honoria Sandoval, as well, knowing that they are quite friendly, and she said that she knew Ginny has been tired but had no idea that she had extended herself beyond her endurance.

However, I promise you both that now that I am familiar with her condition, I shall keep a closer watch. Luckily, Madam Pomfrey is an excellent Healer and Ginny was placed under her care within minutes of fainting.

I'm sure that you will be happy to know all three of her brothers came to visit and have behaved themselves just as you would wish in light of their sister's illness.

Again, please accept my wishes for her speedy recovery and my promise to help look after her once she is back on her feet.

Sincerely,

Penelope Clearwater

Look.

I honestly don't care if you have no incentive to pass your N.E.W.T.s and I really have no interest in whether you use the rest of your lessons to catch up on the engrossing adventures of Martin Miggs.

But will you please stop acting as if Prefects' meetings are nothing more than an excuse to chat up the 6th-year girls?

It would also be refreshing if you could at least occasionally pretend that you could be arsed to lift your wand (or even a finger) on behalf of other students, particularly anyone who isn't in your own House.

Ackerly and Ross both saw it happen and I have no reason to think Bundy would bring it to us if it weren't important. And you know Hedigan, Drumgoole and the others have been a problem since the beginning of the year. I thought it had finally subsided but obviously not.

And as for Darius Warrington--well, I can certainly give him a healthy measure of understanding, considering. But that's no excuse. Lynch is a first-year and he's in third. He should know better, regardless. He should certainly know better than to let a bunch of firsties guide his action. What did they do over hols, think up ways to harass their peers?

So why can't you admit that there's an issue? If you're so certain that Slytherin handle their own problems, then handle it. Or I'm going to Slughorn and the Headmistress.

And I don't mean just telling them not to get caught, because I know that's all you did before. So fix it. Or I shall.

Mr Avery and I would like to officially remind you that as your Head Boy and Girl, we are here to help you with anything you might need. For many of you, it's your first time away from home. The Prefects, Mr Avery and I are prepared to assist your transition to life at school.

Particularly as we enter a year where there has been recent turmoil, we understand that many of you may feel more anxiety than usual. Let me assure you that the Hogwarts Express, and Hogwarts itself, are perfectly safe. Our Professors include some of the best-trained wizards and witches in the world, none of whom would willingly allow an outside source to harm any students in our care. If you have any concerns, please speak to a Prefect. Once at school, Madam Pomfrey, our Matron, is also at hand to address any doubts you may harbour.

A few brief announcements: On the train as in school, no running and no magic in the corridors.

Prefects, we're holding our usual meeting in the back compartments after the trolley has come through with snacks. See you there.

Best wishes for a proper start to the year.

Are the Malfoys going to be all right, Percy? I tried to make it up to the box but they weren't letting anyone in.

Merlin. It's already 1st September and I know I should be sleeping but. I didn't think I'd be this nervous.

I also didn't think we'd barely get to see each other either on your birthday or since.

And starting off a year with this kind of turmoil.... How did you keep everyone calm when there were Dementors on the train and all?

I'll never be able to do it, Perce. I just know I'm going to bollocks it all up.

And I'm sorry. I shouldn't be pestering you when you've got your hands full of much more important things. I'm sure the Malfoys are just overwhelmed with sympathy and get-well notes and all.

I just. I'm off in the morning. And you'll be so busy helping the Malfoys while Mr Malfoy recovers and

I really wish we were together tonight, of all nights. That's all.

I'm going to miss you this year, you know. You big silly ginger. Don't go getting yourself smashed to bits by falling marble, okay? Promise? Or any other fool heroic thing a Gryffindor would do, even if it's for his boss.

First Hogsmeade weekend, right? Butterbeer and a room above the Protector's Circle? It's a date, remember!

Parkinson,

Whatever you've got to say to Weasley can wait. He's not to be disturbed.

If it's a matter of urgency, the Head Girl can help you. And if it's something for him, specifically, then you can pass it through me, if you please.

I know Professor Slughorn's message was mainly in regard to Miss Lestrange, but I thought you'd be clever enough to understand it also applied to Weasley as well. Leave him alone.

I like that! I had just found the ritual I wanted to include in my Arithmancy essay when Madam Pince told everyone we had five minutes left.

And then -

Well. I'm just glad certain people aren't prefects, that's all. Though I have to say I'd have been a sight happier if Calderwood had punished the right people - the ones who were causing all the fracas. I'm sure we'll be talking about it on the train home but honestly! It's not like Calderwood's shown no restraint so far. I probably would have used it on Donovan and Whitacre long ago if I'd been her. Still. It seemed pretty clear to everyone there that her own sister had thrown the hex that started all the unpleasantness.

And with all the excitement I never got a chance to copy out that ritual! Weasley, you don't have a copy of Lunar Calendars and Solar Flair?
