Look.

I honestly don't care if you have no incentive to pass your N.E.W.T.s and I really have no interest in whether you use the rest of your lessons to catch up on the engrossing adventures of Martin Miggs.

But will you please stop acting as if Prefects' meetings are nothing more than an excuse to chat up the 6th-year girls?

It would also be refreshing if you could at least occasionally pretend that you could be arsed to lift your wand (or even a finger) on behalf of other students, particularly anyone who isn't in your own House.

Ackerly and Ross both saw it happen and I have no reason to think Bundy would bring it to us if it weren't important. And you know Hedigan, Drumgoole and the others have been a problem since the beginning of the year. I thought it had finally subsided but obviously not.

And as for Darius Warrington--well, I can certainly give him a healthy measure of understanding, considering. But that's no excuse. Lynch is a first-year and he's in third. He should know better, regardless. He should certainly know better than to let a bunch of firsties guide his action. What did they do over hols, think up ways to harass their peers?

So why can't you admit that there's an issue? If you're so certain that Slytherin handle their own problems, then handle it. Or I'm going to Slughorn and the Headmistress.

And I don't mean just telling them not to get caught, because I know that's all you did before. So fix it. Or I shall.

Hogsmeade!

As this is the first Hogsmeade trip of the year, third-years, please remember to have your permission forms to turn in to Mr Milland on your way out of the castle. No form, no visiting the village.

(And to answer a few people's question: Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students are already granted permission to go to the village as it was included in their release to come to the school at all.)

Please remember that you must be back by six. Have fun!

In response to multiple requests, we shall hold a special meeting of first-years with your fifth-year Prefects in the third classroom on the Charms corridor after supper tonight.

First-years who continue to experience homesickness or other symptoms of trouble adjusting to Hogwarts are reminded that Madam Pomfrey is available to help. I've spoken with her and she is expecting a couple of you; you know who you are.

Please remember that the library closes promptly at nine o'clock on nights preceding lessons. Only NEWT-level students with permission from their Head of House are permitted to stay later. You also need a note from a teacher to obtain any book in the Restricted Section. Any first-year caught trying to gain access to the Restricted Section without permission shall receive detention.

You are also reminded that the Forest is strictly Forbidden and that it is highly advised you give the Whomping Willow a wide berth as you pass by the greenhouses. Remember to allow yourself extra time getting to your lessons if you still can't remember which staircases are inaccessible between class times.

Would the following first-year students plan to stay behind after tonight's meeting: Baddock, Drumgoole, Featherstone, Fellsworthy, Jugson, Mackrell, Spinx, Strangeweale, Symmons and Whitby.

And finally, would this next group of first-years please report to the Great Hall at five o'clock tomorrow: Ackerly, Bones, Cauldwell, Chadwick, Jacobson, Kelpington, Lynch, Nubbins-Crumberhatch and Rittenhouse.

Thank you.

Mr Avery and I would like to officially remind you that as your Head Boy and Girl, we are here to help you with anything you might need. For many of you, it's your first time away from home. The Prefects, Mr Avery and I are prepared to assist your transition to life at school.

Particularly as we enter a year where there has been recent turmoil, we understand that many of you may feel more anxiety than usual. Let me assure you that the Hogwarts Express, and Hogwarts itself, are perfectly safe. Our Professors include some of the best-trained wizards and witches in the world, none of whom would willingly allow an outside source to harm any students in our care. If you have any concerns, please speak to a Prefect. Once at school, Madam Pomfrey, our Matron, is also at hand to address any doubts you may harbour.

A few brief announcements: On the train as in school, no running and no magic in the corridors.

Prefects, we're holding our usual meeting in the back compartments after the trolley has come through with snacks. See you there.

Best wishes for a proper start to the year.

Professor,

Sorry this is late coming. I hadn't had a chance to catch Diggory or Avery before tonight's final Prefect meeting. But now, I've talked to the other YPL counselors and below is the list of those who are willing or able to stay next week to help supervise the rising-fourth-years as they undergo their entrance testing:

Avery
Pennifold
Bletchley
Diggory
Tamblyn
Bobolis (Euterpe)
Urquhart

Also, Ritchie Coote, Marietta Edgecombe, Terrence Higgs and Niobe Jones volunteered to stay, though they'll be in their first year as counselors. I told them I'd talk to you about it but I don't know as we need them; after all, the students really only need someone to keep them from burning down the castle while nearly everyone has left.

I asked Pyle specifically if she'd stay as head counselor, since I can't, but she didn't seem too interested.

Under other circumstances, I hope you know I'd be happy to stay on and oversee things. Just now, though, I'm sure you understand that I have other priorities.

Parkinson,

Whatever you've got to say to Weasley can wait. He's not to be disturbed.

If it's a matter of urgency, the Head Girl can help you. And if it's something for him, specifically, then you can pass it through me, if you please.

I know Professor Slughorn's message was mainly in regard to Miss Lestrange, but I thought you'd be clever enough to understand it also applied to Weasley as well. Leave him alone.

Perce?

I saw your PMs to the professors. Everything all right?

Should I give up on meeting you, then? Or do you need more prefects involved in whatever you're doing?

Hello, again!

I really only want to update the cast of Liberation, but this is the quickest way to get a message to all of you.

First up, again, thanks and my apologies for leaving out Dean Thomas (Y3) from the original cast list. As you all learned on Sunday, he's agreed to undertake the role of Mr Dolohov.

Next, I think we've approached everyone we had on our list to act as an understudy. Please remember, if you've agreed to understudy, it's your responsibility to keep track of the blocking (i.e., movement) for that character (as well as your own), and to be working on the lines in case you're needed. We certainly don't want to lose our fine cast members, but we don't want you to be caught out short, either, if you're called to serve. For those of you who have been assigned understudies, we expect you to help them out. It's not a comment on your ability or our confidence in you; it's merely a precaution since your roles are so pivotal that they can't be replaced at a moment's notice.

Which brings me to my next announcement. As I said, we don't want to lose people, but it's bound to happen: a few students have already left the cast. Vesta Chambers, Elizabeth Stevens and Octavia Anderson have all decided to drop out for personal reasons. As there are so few boys already participating, we really wanted to bring up one of the lads from the Wizengamot chorus to play Vesta's part, so I hope you'll all welcome and congratulate Mr Linus Moon, who will now be our Mr Selwyn!

Finally, as I mentioned on Sunday, we really could use a few more wizards in the Wizengamot - especially with Moon moving up. First- through third-year YPL boys, I'm looking at you in particular! I know you've heard the rumours about wearing makeup, but it's not like that at all. All actors wear some to be seen under the lights. There's no truth whatsoever to the idea that men who are theatrical are all, erm, effeminate. Please consider joining this effort and supporting your fellow YPL members in the project!

On a Prefect note: Whoever jinxed Mr Corner yesterday, you're not helping.

That was one of the more entertaining prefects' meetings so far this year. I suppose it's bound to happen when the term's just started and there's not much for us to do.

Just a few things for you lot in Ravenclaw to remember:

1. This is a school, not a duelling camp. Usual rules about magic in the corridors apply. If you're practising in the common room, please be sure not to hit any bystanders. Er. By-sitters. You know what I mean.

2. Please remember that curfew is still 9:00.

3. The bathrooms are common space. Clear up your personal items when you're done. I shan't call anyone out but you know who you are. Lucky you don't get your shampoo transfigured into marmalade or something (and please don't take that as a suggestion, any of you!!).

4. Remember that try-outs for the play are this Friday. Everyone's welcome. YPL meetings and such will resume shortly and look for the announcements on the bulletin boards in the common room.

5. The Prefects have already noted slightly higher incidents of homesickness compared to previous terms. We've got chocolate and we're making sure all the common room fires are being kept toasty, which should help dispel the effects of the Azkaban guards. If you're feeling particularly down, come see us or the matron. We're also giving some practical lessons on the Patronus charm - next week, I think (isn't it, Weasley?). Well, there will be a notice when we've booked it.

Oh, and Pennifold, I'm nearly done with the article if you want to read it next. I guess you'll have to go a little more careful now you've got an heiress to look after and all!

I like that! I had just found the ritual I wanted to include in my Arithmancy essay when Madam Pince told everyone we had five minutes left.

And then -

Well. I'm just glad certain people aren't prefects, that's all. Though I have to say I'd have been a sight happier if Calderwood had punished the right people - the ones who were causing all the fracas. I'm sure we'll be talking about it on the train home but honestly! It's not like Calderwood's shown no restraint so far. I probably would have used it on Donovan and Whitacre long ago if I'd been her. Still. It seemed pretty clear to everyone there that her own sister had thrown the hex that started all the unpleasantness.

And with all the excitement I never got a chance to copy out that ritual! Weasley, you don't have a copy of Lunar Calendars and Solar Flair?
alt_penelope: (serious)
Davies, if you must have meetings with your Quidditch team in the Common Room, I'd appreciate it if you lot could at least clean your kit first! There's mud all over the best chairs now.

And Preece, I've told you before that you'll have to keep your toad under control. It's found its way into the 1st-year girls' dormitories again. Ross and Desai are such screamers they woke half the second-years as well. To say nothing of the fact that it completely disrupted my train of thought in my Runes essay. Don't you have a proper terrarium? If not, please see Professor Brutka tomorrow and I'm sure he can get you something suitable.

(Weasley, I have that Runes text you lent me. Give it back at the Prefects' meeting, if that's all right?)
alt_penelope: (Default)
Titchy little second-years! Which group are you going with after lunch? I said I'd go with Jenkins, whichever group she picks.

I thought maybe if we could get them going on their nature hike we could...you know...slip away for a few minutes? There's a little clearing I saw on the walk we took yesterday to prepare the pathways for them.
